November marks National Homeless Youth Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness for the children and families in our communities who experience homelessness. Each year, an estimated 4.2 million youth and young adults in the United States face homelessness, with around 700,000 of these young individuals navigating life without the support of family or guardians. In addition to the loss of a stable home, these youth often face disrupted routines, separation from friends, and a diminished sense of safety—all of which can impact their ability to thrive academically and socially.
Youth who experience homelessness face unique and serious challenges. In addition to the daily uncertainty and lack of shelter, they are at increased risk of mental health struggles, substance abuse, victimization, and other hardships. Schools play a crucial role in offering stability, safety, and a sense of community for these students, helping mitigate some of the trauma and challenges they face.
At TCSOS, our Homeless Youth Support services are dedicated to ensuring that students affected by homelessness have access to resources that provide stability and support. Our team collaborates with schools and community partners to identify and assist students experiencing homelessness, ensuring they have access to academic resources, counseling, and other essential services. We also work to connect families with local resources that can provide assistance with housing, mental health, and other needs.

We invite our community members to wear a green pin this month as a symbol of support for homeless youth. Green pins are available at the TCSOS front desk for those who are interested.
By coming together as a community, we can make a meaningful impact on the lives of students experiencing homelessness and help provide them with the foundation they need to succeed. Thank you for your commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students in Tuolumne County.
