Superintendent

Zack Abernathy

County Superintendent of Schools

Zack Abernathy was born and raised in Tuolumne County, where he has deep roots as a sixth-generation resident. From his early years, Zack’s love for sports shaped his character, instilling valuable life lessons that he now imparts as a coach. His educational journey began in the heart of Tuolumne County, attending Sonora Elementary before moving on to Sonora High School. Continuing his pursuit of knowledge, he furthered his studies at Modesto Junior College, participating in collegiate baseball and earning his associate degree.

His academic endeavors led him to California State University, Fresno, where he proudly graduated with a bachelor’s degree, actively participating in the Agricultural Ambassadors program. Returning to his hometown, Zack married his high school sweetheart, embarking on a journey that eventually led him to the realm of education. He dedicated himself to shaping young minds, undertaking the Teachers College of San Joaquin credential program, followed by pursuit of master’s and administration degrees.

Despite possessing an Administrative Credential, Zack’s passion for direct engagement with students kept him in the classroom. For thirteen years, he served as a Director of Student Activities, leaving a positive mark on the students of Bret Harte High School and Sonora High School. His greatest gratitude lies in his family, including his two sons and his unwaveringly supportive wife.

Now, as the Superintendent of Schools, Zack Abernathy stands as a delighted representative of the people of Tuolumne County, committed to leading, learning, and growing in the community he holds dear. He maintains that every educational decision we make needs to be made with the students at the heart of the decision.

As Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Abernathy leads the Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools Office, which is dedicated to supporting the educational needs of the county’s students and providing guidance to local school districts. As County Superintendent Mr. Abernathy monitors the fiscal health and academic performance of the districts, intervening only as needed to ensure compliance with the state. His statutory obligation to fiscal oversight is in a supportive capacity unless a district is found to be at risk in which case the Tuolumne Superintendent of Schools office would provide direction to support the district in getting back into compliance.
