Living Skills
The Independent Living Skills (ILS) program serves students with moderate to severe disabilities, providing a regionalized approach to specialized education. Access to the ILS program is determined by the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team and requires a referral from the student’s local school district.
The ILS program gives students access to California Content Standards through the TeachTown special education curriculum. This research-based curriculum addresses key subjects, including English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, with a focus on functional life skills. Content is adapted to be accessible for students with intellectual disabilities, allowing for meaningful engagement with academic concepts. Student progress is monitored using the SANDI assessment system, which provides data-driven insights to guide IEP goal development and helps IEP teams adjust programming to meet each student’s evolving needs.
Inclusionary and behavioral strategies, grounded in evidence-based practices, are used to support placement in the least restrictive educational environment. Students have opportunities to learn in various general education classrooms and settings.
Each ILS classroom is staffed with a full-time teacher and a team of instructional assistants, ensuring appropriate support for all students. Related services include a Speech/Language Pathologist, Board Certified Behavior Analyst, Registered Behavior Technician, Occupational Therapist, Adaptive PE Specialist, and School Psychologist.
The ILS program includes three classrooms located on the Soulsbyville Elementary campus, serving grades TK-1, 2-4, and 5-8.
