National School Bus Safety Week

Keeping Our Students Safe on the Road

The Tuolumne County Superintendent of Schools (TCSOS) has partnered with all 11 public school districts to bring attention to National School Bus Safety Week, held during the third full week of October each year. This week-long event is an opportunity for parents, students, teachers, motorists, and school staff to work together and ensure the safety of students traveling to and from school.

A key highlight of this year’s efforts was a presentation to the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors, where local transportation leaders shared the importance of community collaboration in keeping our students safe. The presentation emphasized the need for all community members to follow school bus safety rules, such as stopping for flashing red lights and watching for children crossing the street.

Did You Know?

According to the NHTSA, about 26,000 school bus accidents occur in the U.S. each year. Between 2012 and 2021, 206 school-age children died in school-transportation-related crashes, with half of these tragedies involving pedestrians aged 5 to 10 years. These statistics highlight the need for increased vigilance from all drivers.

Daily Safety Tips

Throughout the week, TCSOS will share daily safety tips on social media, focusing on:

  • STOP for flashing red lights: It’s the law.
  • WATCH for children crossing the street.
  • KEEP our students and staff SAFE by driving carefully around school zones.

Get Involved!

We encourage all community members to follow along on social media, share the tips, and help spread the word about school bus safety. Together, we can ensure a safer journey for every student.
